Apple's acquisition of Beats gets EU approval

As with every massive acquisition, the announcement doesn't really mean all that much until all of the regulatory bodies around the world sign off on the deal. Google announced intentions to sell Motorola to Lenovo back inJanuary, but no regulatory bodies have approved that deal yet. It took about 8 months for the Microsoft/Nokia deal to be completed. Now, Apple has cleared one hurdle in its purchase of Beats Audio.

European Union antitrust regulators in the European Commission have approved the $3 billion sale, saying that the combined headphone market share will be low for Apple; and, there will still be quite a lot of competition in the headphone and streaming music markets. It is expected that the Apple deal will go through much faster than either the Motorola or Nokia deals, because there is far less antitrust concern with Apple buying Beats, and there aren't the international concerns about where money and jobs could be gained and lost, as both companies are American.

The ultimate goal of Apple buying Beats is still somewhat unclear, although the iconic Beats branding is obviously an appeal to Apple, and it does need some help with its streaming music offerings. Many still believe that the real purchase was for the star power with Dr Dre, Jimmy Iovine, and the myriad athletes and celebrities already on-board in Beats ads. Of course, the faster the deal goes through, the faster we'll get to see what Apple has planned.

Meet the creative minds behind the Samsung Galaxy S5, Gear 2, and Gear Fit

Dedicated designers, planners and engineers are at the heart of Samsung's evolutionary devices. Each and every one of them is personally committed to driving innovation around the most important and impactful everyday features and take a key part in the process of figuring out how to bring aspirational technology into reality. Few people realize the tremendous amounts of planning, collaboration and creativity that go into designing a new smart device. Samsung, as a respected leader in the tech industry, has gathered its own team of highly creative designers, and with this post, we'd like to introduce you to three key figures: Dong Hun Kim, who was involved in the design direction of the Galaxy S5, JunYong Song, who helped develop Samsung's wearable devices, including Galaxy Gear and Gear 2, and Jaewoong Choi, who worked on designing the Gear Fit. These three senior designers share the common goal of making the best product available to their consumers with the end goal of creating products and experiences that users want to use confidently every day.

Dong Hun Kim
Senior Designer in the Product Design Group

Meet the creative minds behind the Samsung Galaxy S5, Gear 2, and Gear Fit

“WE DESIGN WITH A FOCUS ON TOUCH.”

With previous experience in designing vehicles, Dong Hun joined Samsung as an experienced designer four years ago. He was involved in ID design for the Galaxy S5. Dong Hun's team conducted a lot of initial research to determine if certain designs were even possible given the large scales of production flagships must undergo. “We tried to deliver the most comfortable experience to the users. With Galaxy S5's ergonomic design, we considered all the factors, such as grip and tactile feeling, as well as mass production, durability tests, quality assurance.”

In the past, Dong Hun's team would focus on the color and gloss for the battery cover design. For the Galaxy S5, they considered the feel of the device, keeping in mind that mobile devices are one of the most frequently held objects in people's hands.

His team also approached the Galaxy S5 as a daily fashion accessory during the conceptualization stage. They researched evolving trends of items used by people on a daily basis, from fashion to architecture to lighting to automotive. “We also acquired insights from a diverse set of accessories, like jewelry, premium watches and leather bags,” explains Dong Hun. “The shape and feel of the battery cover on the Galaxy S5 was inspired by leather goods. If you look at the trends for leather designs, we see bold patterns and gloss. We were inspired by these trends and worked on the design based on this insight.”

JunYong Song
Senior Designer in Product Design Group

Meet the creative minds behind the Samsung Galaxy S5, Gear 2, and Gear Fit

“WEARABLE PRODUCTS LIKE THE GALAXY GEAR WERE ONLY USED IN MOVIES 5-6 YEARS AGO. NOW THEY ARE A REALITY. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS.”

JunYong wanted to be a designer since he was in middle school. He joined Samsung in 2004 and was firstly involved in the early conceptualization of smartphones. Now, he is designing new wearable devices, such as the Galaxy Gear and Gear 2. Galaxy Gear was a particularly interesting project for JunYong because the design team needed to come up with a fresh concept for Samsung's completely new category of wearables. The team continuously discussed and collaborated with other teams in order to build a design foundation. The design is particularly important because it is the first impression a consumer has of a new device. JunYong's team had to put a lot of thought into what kind of benefits consumers would gain from the device.

Design development is a collaborative process across various teams, and opinions can often vary. “Designers may want to take one direction, whereas engineers may feel differently,” explains JunYong. “Sometimes these different opinions lead to conflicts, and it can be a challenge staying true to my initial design concept while taking the needs of other teams into consideration at the same time. In the end, however, each team shares a common goal of making the best product possible.”

JunYong loves thinking about the different kinds of products he hopes to design in the future. “I get inspired by watching movies and imagining,” he says. “Wearable products like the Galaxy Gear were products of the future only shown in movies 5-6 years ago, and now this technology has become a reality. The possibilities are endless.”

Jaewoong Choi
Senior Designer in the UX Innovation Group

Meet the creative minds behind the Samsung Galaxy S5, Gear 2, and Gear Fit

“WE REALLY WANTED TO MAKE A WEARABLE PRODUCT THAT USERS COULD WEAR CONFIDENTLY EVERY DAY.”

Jaewoong is a senior designer focused on the Gear Fit and has worked at Samsung for seven years. To come up with the design concept for Gear Fit, he studied the market to understand what users really wanted from a wearable device. Based on numerous tests and market insights, his team planned a product in the form of a sleek wristband with a curved LCD. “We were very focused on simplifying functions for the Gear Fit,” says Jaewoong. “We really wanted to make a wearable product that the users could wear confidently every day without any hesitation.”

His team also tested many different versions of the device to find one that would fit comfortably on any wrist. “Initially, the team felt that the Gear Fit would look best if the curvature was small, but then those with thicker wrists felt uncomfortable.” Jaewoong’s team tested more than 100 different mock-ups and adjustments of the Gear Fit’s design before a final decision on the size was made.

Jaewoong loves the collaborative nature of his team and believes that this cooperative mentality is what enables their team to come up with great products that work for all types of consumers. “There are many designers with diverse backgrounds at Samsung, and because of that various strong points can be converged. All of the designers help each other, learn from each other, and motivate one another.”

NOKIA LUMIA 930

Introduction

The Lumia 930 is the international version of Verizon's exclusive Lumia Icon flagship, and is arguably the swan song of the Nokia that were, as it has been conceived before Microsoft gobbled up its entire smartphone business. Nevertheless, it is Windows Phone's attempt to hold the flagship fort against Android juggernauts like theGalaxy S5 or the Xperia Z2. At first brush it has everything needed to take them head-on, like a large 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, a 20 MP main camera, and exclusive Dolby surround audio recording. How about when we dive into the details? Let's see...

In the box

  • In-ear stereo headphones
  • Nokia AC-60 wall charger
  • Nokia Charging and Data Cable CA-190CD
  • Warranty and information leaflets

Design

With its chunky, but comfortable to grasp chassis, the Lumia 930 is one solid piece of unibody craftsmanship.

Compared to the Lumia 1020 and its giant 41 MP camera hump on the back, Nokia Lumia 930 is definitely smaller. However, at 5.39 x 2.80 x 0.39 inches (137 x 71 x 9.8 mm) and weighing 5.89 oz (167 g), it is still bulky and heavy for a 5-incher. The heavy unibody chassis feel very solid, though, and this feeling is further reinforced by the aluminum rim surrounding the sides, which gives the colorful polycarbonate pillow-shaped shells of the Lumia 930 a more premium look. We also liked how the tapered cover glass slopes towards the sides to merge with the metal rim for one uninterrupted look and feel. Nokia bragged that it takes hundreds of robotic movements to achieve the curved glass edges, and we have to say that the results of all that scrubbing are very pleasant to hold or simply look at.

The buttons are all located comfortably on the right hand side, with the most used power/lock key right smack in the middle. The lock key, as well as the volume rocker above it, and the two-stage camera shutter button are very ergonomic, easy to feel and press without looking, and with a deep tactile feedback.

Microsoft to Kinect Up the Next Windows Phone

The Verge has reported that Microsoft is in the process of inducting Kinect features in its next Windows phone, code named “Mclaren”. The Mclaren was introduced to the world through phone tripsters EVLeaks.
The phone will be a successor to the Lumia 1020 and will boast propriety technology like 3D touch and Real Motion. These features will assist in interaction with the phone without actually touching the display.
Kinect is now integral to the Xbox experience
Kinect is now integral to the Xbox experience
Kinect was reveled at the 2010 E3 conference. Kinect made sense on a large screen system like the Xbox. Its features which made technology invisible was appreciated by people. The question that everyone seems to be asking is whether a phone version of Kinect will actually have some benefits or will be just another gimmicky add-on.
Some of the reported features include the ability to answer a phone call by just bringing it to your ears or cutting a call when the phone is dropped back in the pocket. The phone can also be put on a table to start an speakerphone conversation. These features have to be utility based or else they will end up as the Air Gestures in the Samsung phones.
The phone will also be fitted with pressure sensing instruments on the sides to detect changes in grip. They want to make external buttons completely obsolete. One of the way this can be used is gripping the phone can power on the device. Even the Camera can be zoomed in and out just by doing the usual pinching motions near the device.
These features were originally intended to be used on the Windows 8.1 powered Nokia Goldfinger phones. This phone is now being pushed back for a later release, while the Mclaren is being given priority. This is one more way in which Microsoft is pushing the Nokia name off the edge. Some have said that Nokia’s innovations are being stripped for profitable parts in Microsoft’s research labs.
The new UI will be inspired by Zune Mixview
The new UI will be inspired by Zune Mixview
The phones will also have a tiny UI renovation with the Kinect induction. When pointed above a tile it will open multiple floating tiles. This is inspired by the Zune Mixview. The tech makes sense on a big screen where there was minimum learning curve, but in a small screen it will be a whole different story. Microsoft would have had to go back to the drawing board to make the technology featurable on a handheld device.
Now as these are still leaks and we’d have to wait for the device to come in our hands before we comment on the functionality of these features. This of course will be a good experiment to look forward to. Microsoft Xbox’s Kinectic abilities suit it well for a home entertainment system, but it has to take some real efforts to convince people that hovering fingers over your phone is as good as having a touch response.

A lot of Dhoom in Battlefield Hardline

The Top 5 FIFA World Cup Ads of 2014

1. NIKE

Football’s existence is under threat. It just had a corporate takeover and there has just been an attack of the clones. Our favourite sport is ruined and the greatest footballers now have to do odd jobs to survive. The Original Ronaldo decides brings them all together to save a game that has been their collective passion. Sometimes in life you just have to Risk Everything.

2. SAMSUNG

Earth is about to be destroyed and all the hopes of saving the planet rests on Footballers (because love for Football is not limited to just Earth.) Earth’s Mightiest footballers join forces against Aliens who seem inspired by the Predator. They are led by a hooded overlord who kinda reminds you of the Emperor from Star Wars. It’s almost a TV show as the ads are released in parts, teasing and keeping folks asking for more.
The Immense investment in these ads is impressive. The All Star video almost looks Avatar-ish.

3. ESPN

Football is a religion in most part of the world. Every 4 years the world is united by this religion and we all come together in one time zone: The World Cup Mean Time.

4. BEATS BY DRE

The five-minute ad, which is exhilarating to watch even for those who aren’t fans of the sport, begins with Neymar, the Brazilian star, having an emotional and empowering conversation with his father before the start of a match. The conversation goes on through the ad, as the setting changes from country to country and person to person. The powerhouse track playing in the background is ‘Jungle’ by X-Ambassadors and Jamie N Commons while the ad features famous football personalities like Rio Ferdinand, Cesc Fàbregas, Luis Suárez, Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry, as well as LeBron James, Nicki Minaj and others not from the football world.

5.MCDONALD’S

The clip was released to coincide with the start of the tournament in BrazilOne of them is a young boy. Another is a woman who happens to be wearing massive heels. There’s even an elderly man on a motorised scooter. All of them are shown performing ridiculous tricks with a football on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. We presume much of the trickery in this clip was accomplished using sly camera tactics, but even so, it makes for fine viewing.
