Backup Backup Backup

What is backup?
  • With backup , we understand storage of that data which is useful for us and which is hard to get all over again. Data which is ,if lost , will leads to irreparable damage. For e.g. if document related to tax is lost or any business document or a paid program which can not be downloaded again etc., it will cause a damage which cannot be undone. So to avoid such situation, it is required that we have a backup of all important data.
  • In general rule of thumb (also called Platinum rule of backup) we must have three copies of important data, the original,a backup of original and a backup of backup. And these backup should be placed in different locations, basically one online and one in hard drive or laptop or external hard disk , so that it can be easily available whenever you need it.
  • First thing which we have to know what all we need to backup. Basically its our choice, if we want we can create backup of everything, but is it worth backing up everything? like things which we can get easily over internet, we do not need to take the backup of that. The things which once lost, can never be regained, that should be backed-up.Important Electronic documents, artistic creations, photos , video etc or any thing whose loss leaves a negative emotion.
The next question that comes into our mind, where to back it up?
  • A very logical and useful question whose answer is quite easy to find out. If you want your backup to be online and you have good broadband upstream bandwidth then it is easy to create online backup for your desktop PC. The other way to do this is to create a backup in your hard drive. To store your local files you can also use pendrive or external hard drive. Alternatively, you could use a network-attached storage box. Gigabit Ethernet is as fast as USB 3.0, and a NAS box lets you back up multiple computers on a network without any physically movement of the storage device.
Now its time for some action and actual process, that is how to back it up?
  • Now you have all the data what you have to back up and where you want to back up.First of all we have to select the disaster recovery and backup software. Windows 7 and 8 offers in-built application which can create backups. There are many other software which we can install in our computer for creating data backups. Some of software are Acronis Backup and Recovery, True Image, Easeus Todo Backup, Genie Timeline Backup, and Nova Backup.
  • After installing the software, select the destination for the backup, this can be the external drive, select the partition(c drive, d drive etc) or the files that you want to back up. Run the back up process, when the process is finished , place the backup media safely. Create the recovery media. Schedule the process( backup programs have this option) as required for daily, weekly, monthly backups.
Free online backup and storage spaces are available for major mobile platform , like for iPhone- icloud is there, for Android- Google drive and for Windows phone- Skydrives are there, a lot different spaces for the storage. Just we require some respective apps and we can get local copies of our files.
To lower the risk of data loss we require Backup and is very useful at time of data lost.
